The blaze at Mt Clear was sparked by lightning on Wednesday night and was contained at one hectare but by Thursday morning the fire had doubled in size to two hectares.
Two water bombing aircraft were used to contain the fire on Wednesday night but were forced to return to the Hume base due to to flight restrictions at night.
The helicopter lifted off again shortly before 8am on Thursday morning as firefighters on foot closed in on the fire.
More than 20 firefighters from the ACT Rural Fire Service including volunteers and seasonal members of the PARKS Brigade worked to extinguish the fire on Thursday afternoon.
Five helicopters and two fixed wing planes conducted water and retardant bombing on the fire as the rough terrain prevented the use of fire trucks.
The fire remains at 'advice' alert level, meaning there is no immediate danger.
