When we think of significant regattas we have to give Britain top billing with their wet and wild wonder on the Thames for HM's Diamond Jubilee, a marvel of precision and a celebration of their sailing history.

You have to think, too, of the traditions of rowing regattas with Henley-on-Thames a frightfully fabulous social event where the smart set dresses appropriately, behaves impeccably and those beautiful young men in their rowing machines chase a glittering prize.
Well, hang on to you Pimms and get ready for the Canberra version with the inaugural Burley Griffin Regatta on Saturday, December 8, where not just the rowers, but our much-loved dragon boaters and kayakers, will take to the water for a magnificent display of racing and mucking about in boats.
The official launch was a mini version of the promised Hyatt hospitality for the regatta with the blossoms in the Hyatt rose garden courtyard picture perfect, the oysters luscious and fat, food prepared to order, jugs of Pimms to wet your whistle for the summer ahead, and a fashion parade to show just how to dress for a regatta. This event has a charity component to support Boundless Canberra, which is building the all-abilities children's playground in Commonwealth Park.
It's going to be fun. A day to mix it with the social set, enjoy glorious weather (we insist), cheer on the boaties and be glad we didn't get a Henley on Todd regatta. More information at burleygriffinregatta.com.au/faq.
