While many of the reported injuries were relatively minor, some of the more serious cases included:

ACT government data shows in the past three years apprentices have been involved in about 100 incidents serious enough to lead to accepted compensation claims. A government spokeswoman was unable to provide the potentially larger number of lodged claims.

Apprentice training schemes in Canberra are run by the MBA, HIA, Electro Group, Australian Training Company, 1300 Apprentice and NECA.

Each year from 2014 to 2016, about 15 per cent of the roughly 150 apprentices enrolled in the Masters Buildings Association's group training program lodged a compensation claim.

The figure, which far outstrips the general construction injury rate of 4 per cent, was revealed in documents obtained by Fairfax Media and later confirmed by the MBA.

About 80 per cent of the dozens of injury incident reports Fairfax Media analysed placed some blame on the apprentice, stating "personal" as the basic cause. Some said it was allowing inexperienced workers to undergo dangerous tasks, while one read the process that lead to the injury would be expensive to fix.

Some injuries were sustained through the government-funded Kids Assist, an MBA group training scheme for school students to undertake an apprenticeship. This includes a 16-year-old boy who survived a seven-metre fall at a construction site in October.

The documents also revealed the MBA apprentice who severely injured his finger and thumb with a power saw last December sustained an eye injury four months earlier on site.

One worker was not wearing his hard hat while installing wall insulation last March and smacked his head into a metal bracket.

In the same month, another man stepped on a plumbing pipe that was sticking out at the bottom of a ladder, causing him to slip, twist his ankle and fall onto his back.

It was not uncommon for apprentices to lodge multiple compensation claims over the course of their traineeship, including one man who injured his right foot, left shoulder, left knee, finger and right ear within 18 months.

MBA ACT chief executive Kirk Conningham said his organisation's high injury rate was because apprentices were trained to report any incidents, including near misses.

"This is consistent with modern safety culture that aims to prevent incidents or injury by identifying even apparently minor workplace issues," he said.

"We are always open to how we can build an experience that will make apprentices safe, how to get better aware."

Mr Conningham said he would await a report from Worksafe ACT into construction injuries, and he hoped it would help make the MBA and the entire industry safer.

Personal injury lawyer Noor Blumer said the number of inquiries she received from workers injured on ACT building sites was consistently high. She said young workers were less likely to question their supervisors about concerns around safety for fear of bullying and ridicule.

"Younger workers don't have the skills and experience to recognise dangerous work practices which leaves them more vulnerable to injuries," Ms Blumer said.

The ACT government provided conflicting figures for apprentice and trainee participation in 2016 before settling with 1298. However, data showed construction trade completion rates in the ACT was just 50 per cent.

Since the number of apprentices on site at any time varied greatly, a precise estimate of the overall injury rate could not be made.

A spokesman for Electro Group did not provide the organisation's injury figures, but said its safety management exceeded regulatory requirements.

"Put simply, apprentices arrive home safely from work each day," he said.

The HIA, Australian Training Company, 1300 Apprentice and NECA did not respond to requests for comment.
