Australians can cut their grocery bill in half by ditching fancy brands sold at the big two supermarkets and heading to Aldi, a shopping survey by consumer advocate Choice has found.
It also found Canberrans pay less at the checkout than any other capital cities if shopping at the two major supermarkets, with the average basket costing about $7 less than in the most expensive city. The news for IGA shoppers wasn't so good for the hip pocket.

"I can reassure all the Canberra fans that we're not in the business of trying to convince people to renege on commitments that they've already made," Annesley told Fairfax Media on Wednesday night.
"Whilst Aidan's been a great player for us and is a great player and is a great acquisition for the Raiders, we won't be trying to ask him to change his mind."

8.05am: Our reporter Emma Kelly is on the scene at the fatal crash in Latham, she has sent through some pictures of the horrific scene, saying the car is "almost unrecognisable". Police are talking to media out there now, we'll keep you updated as details come through.
7.35am: One person has died in that crash on Ginninderra Drive. Just before 5am, a single car crashed into a tree and caught fire, killing the driver. No one else was in the car. Ginninderra Drive remains closed westbound between Kingsford Smith Drive and Tillyard Drive.
7am: There has been a very bad single-vehicle crash on Ginninderra Drive this morning. Westbound Lanes are closed. We'll bring you more information on that as it comes in. Firefighters and police are attending.

Director John Sheedy said he felt a lot of pressure in bringing the classic Australian children's book Storm Boy to the stage, beloved as it was by generations.
The artistic director of Perth's Barking Gecko Theatre Company, which produces theatre for young people, Sheedy said Colin Thiele's 1964 novel - made into an award-winning 1976 film - came to mind several years ago as a potential project. He took it to the Sydney Theatre Company which came on board as co-producer.
