Canberra Now: Man dies after being tasered by police; ACT dangerous dog laws revealed

Here's what's making headlines today.

A man died yesterday after he was tasered by police in Waramanga.

Police were called to the home after receiving reports of a man yelling and smashing glass. In a statement, ACT Policing said officers arrived to find him seriously injured and used a taser to prevent him causing further harm.

He died at the scene.

Neighbours described the man as quiet, friendly and always willing to provide a helping hand.

Refugees on Manus Island were braced for potential calamity last night as they refused to leave the now-decommissioned detention centre and feared violent clashes with locals and the military.

Power and water were cut after Australian and PNG staff abandoned the site on Tuesday morning. About 600 men have refused to move.

The ugly and potentially violent standoff marks another dark episode in the history of Australia's offshore processing regime.

The ACT opposition will introduce the legislation to the Legislative Assembly today. It comes after the tragic death of a Watson woman last week, who was killed by her own pet dog, Simba.

Other measures in the bill include a minimum $750 fee for licence applications to keep a dangerous dog, and measures to ensure complaints about dog attacks causing injury to a person or serious injury to another animal are investigated.

The future of the 90-year-old Canberra Bowling Club is uncertain after a promised move to a new home was delayed.

The club's Braddon site was sold to developers last year with a promise the Ainslie Group would help it relocate to new bowling greens at its Gungahlin Lakes Golf and Community Club by July this year.

But the board has deferred its decision with bowling club president Bob Powell telling Katie Burgess the future of the club is now in doubt.
