Bush Tucker afterDARK - This event is the perfect place to sample some of Australia's native meats and plants, while learning about Indigenous food during a guided tour. With plenty of options on the menu, the tour will take place in various parts of the Australian National Botanic Gardens. Pixel Play – Inspired by games he used to love playing on his Nintendo, Canberra Glassworks studio artist Nick Adam makes the school holidays fun by recreating games in his artworks. Working with Nick, kids are able to make their own digitally-inspired images from glass. Tickets are $95/child and sessions run on Mondays January 11 and 18. Suitable for kids aged 8+. Space Descent Virtual Reality Experience - Imagine being an astronaut on a 400km descent to Earth from the International Space Station! At the National Museum of Australia, visitors are able to experience this all using the latest 360-degree VR technology. Not recommended for children under 13 years. Fossil Dig – The Fossil Dig is a real hands-on experience for visitors of Canberra's National Dinosaur Museum. Kids and parents have the opportunity to learn about different fossils and even earn a certificate upon completion. Fossil Dig is on at noon every day until Sunday January 21 and is free with normal entry.

The Puppet Show – For kids aged three to nine, The Puppet Show goes in search of the Lizard of Oz. Filled with dino-extravaganza activities, children learn about a range of dinosaur species and - importantly - which dinosaurs to avoid! Dinosaur Hunt – These school holidays, the National Dinosaur Museum is giving away a real fossil to those visitors who score highly on the prehistoric quiz. The quiz is part of the museum's daily Dinosaur Hunt, free with normal entry and taking place every day of the holidays. Head to the museum's website for more.

What if your child could serve up Toblerone cheesecake for dessert, or a Vietnamese noodle salad for dinner? Send them off to Kids Pantry these holidays and they'll learn how to make both. Blinky Bill: The Mischievous Koala - An Aussie favourite. A big-screen adaption of the 1933 children's book, Blinky Bill, written by Brooke Nicholls. Screening at the National Portrait Gallery on Saturday January 6 at 2.30pm. Further information here.

Summer Storytime - the perfect opportunity to sit down with the kids and read some of the National Library's best and most rare books from its children's collection. Entry is $2, payable at the door on Wednesday January 24. Session runs from 11:30am to 12:30pm at the National Library of Australia.

Story Time – it's story time with Andrea Beaty's Iggy Peck, Architect, and at this unique event kids have the chance to draw their own visual response to the book. All materials are provided at $7 a child, and the Portrait Gallery invites any child (accompanied by an adult) of any drawing ability to come along and join in the fun. Wednesdays January 3 and 31. Biodiversity Detectives - Running throughout the month of January, this school holiday program immerses kids in a world of discovery at the Australian National Botanic Gardens. Designed just for kids aged seven to 12, the program offers a different theme every single visit. From reptiles of the land to flowers and trees, kids have a full-day of hands-on science experimentation. Bookings are essential and tickets can be purchased here.

Summer Sounds - Perfect for the whole family, Summer Sounds is a feast of live music, food and drink, and craft stalls on the Australian National Botanic Gardens' Eucalypt Lawns. It's on for two weekends, Saturday January 27 and Sunday January 28, and Saturday February 3 and Sunday February 4pm, between 6pm and 7.30pm each night. Further information can be found here.

PlayUp Plays - Whether the kids want to play inside or out, the Museum of Australian Democracy has launched a new PlayUp space for parents to enjoy with their kids. PlayUp's The Right to Have an Opinion and Be Heard allows families to explore the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in an interactive and playful way. PlayUp runs from 9am-4pm daily during the summer school holidays, with tickets ranging from $1 to $5. More information here.

Balloonatic - Ever wondered what happens to balloons when the temperature drops and rises? At Balloonatic, kids can discover the science of the humble balloon. The exhibition opens Sunday December 24 and runs until early January. More details can can be found here.

Kspace at the National Museum of Australia - the award-winning kids space is an interactive room for children to learn, create and have fun. Rockets #101 - Dr Blashtov will attempt to launch 10 rockets in 30 minutes in this engaging show at Questacon. Three sessions run this Wednesday December 20 and tickets are available at Questacon on the day. For more information head to the Questacon website.

Colour and Light - Kids are given the opportunity to learn how light travels as waves and how light can influence various colours, while comparing their own colour perceptions. Colour and Light will run on various dates in January at Questacon.

Make your own summer tile – What do you love about summer in Canberra? Is it the people? The places you visit? Or all the presents you receive at Christmas? In these sessions at Canberra Glassworks, kids aged 8+ (as well as adults) will have made their own summer-inspired tiles. Make your own bird/paperweight – This class will let you create your own unique glass paperweight in just 20 minutes! From adding different colours and using different tools to shaping molten glass, MYO Bird/Paperweight class members will work very closely with an artist to achieve their desired creation.
