Why books in the home are a valuable thing

I have this recurring dream where I am buried alive under a pile of books which have inevitably tumbled off my bedside table. As I'm laying there, struggling to breathe, I'm reading the blurb on the back of Ann Patchett's latest, Commonwealth, and my last thought before I die is I wish I had have finished that.
