A Sydney tiler allegedly paid bribes to a construction union official to get work in Canberra because "that's the market", the royal commission has heard.
A formwork subcontractor also claimed to have made payments of about $135,000 in cash he allegedly handed to the same Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union organiser in envelopes to guarantee a competitive advantage over rivals.
The Canberra stop of the royal commission into trade unions opened on Monday to explosive allegations of payments in return for CFMEU support to win business.

Canberra Hockeyroos Anna Flanagan and Edwina Bone insist the 'Roovolution' won't be complete unless they win gold at next year's Olympics, adamant the team isn't scarred by recent losses to the Dutch.
The Hockeyroos earned qualification for next year's Rio Games with bronze at last week's Hockey World League in Belgium, but the pair admitted a 5-1 semi-final defeat to the Netherlands could be a timely wake-up call.

Ranging from hot chocolate packed with fudge and marshmallow to the cold Nutella shake complete with a pretzel-lined topping of the hazelnut spread and whipped cream, the extravagant drinks have taken social media by storm to the delight of the owners of seven-week-old Manuka cafe Patissez.
The invention of co-owner Anna Petridis, the Muddy Pat, Nutty Pat, Nutella & Salty Pretzel and French Vanilla shakes have led the traffic amid an impressive selection of desserts, pastries and mains, leaving those on Facebook drooling over their keyboards.

The National Gallery of Australia has released more tickets to James Turrell's critically acclaimed Perceptual Cell experience, which was sold out earlier this year.
The Perceptual Cell, which allows a single person inside a white metal sphere for an intense 15-minute light display, was the centrepiece of the James Turrell: A Retrospective exhibition which closed in June.
Tickets to the work of art sold out just two months into the show's run, but there's good news for the hundreds of people who missed out.
On Monday morning, the National Gallery of Australia announced the release of more tickets to the Perceptual Cell on weekends from August 8 until November 1.
