Sudden change and massive obstacles mark the year in ACT politics

The year began with Katy Gallagher, mother of three, an empathetic leader, and from the party's left, as chief minister. It ended with Andrew Barr in the top job – social progressive, economic conservative, the country's first gay leader of any jurisdiction, a member of the right, more bullish in attitude than his predecessor, and beginning in hard hat and fluoro vest declared "our job is jobs".
