It has also confirmed 173 parking fines were issued at the Canberra Girls Grammar School fete and 49 fines issued at the Weetangera Public School fete.

Even if the motorists at the Grammar fete were each fined $120, they provided a $20,760 pay day for the government and added up to $46,710 to the coffers if they were each fined $270.

A newly-produced flyer is also to be distributed to all ACT schools, including independent and Catholic schools, via the Education Directorate,  reminding people they will be fined if they park illegally at their school fete.

The flyer urges people to "spend your money at the fete, not on parking fines" and details various fines such as $120 for parking on the verge and $270 for parking in no stopping zones.

The Liberal Opposition last week called for the government to waive parking fines incurred at recent fetes for Canberra Girls Grammar School and Weetangera Public School, saying it was "a very ungracious and unreasonable attempt at revenue raising''.

Access Canberra's regulatory solutions and compliance director Ben Green was unmoved, saying safety was its priority, not revenue-raising.

"Parking infringements were issued at recent school fetes due to cars being parked illegally, including in no stopping zones or on footpaths; pedestrians are then forced to walk on the road where motorists potentially can’t see them, especially in the case of small children," Mr Green said.

"Parking illegally on footpaths also forces people with mobility impairments onto the road, also causing a visibility risk."

Mr Green also made no apologies for vans with licence plate recognition cameras being deployed to school fetes.

"Access Canberra parking inspectors have historically undertaken foot patrols around fetes and large events to ensure the safety of our vulnerable road users. The introduction of LPR has not changed this approach," he said.

Mr Green said in a statement schools had been warned the LPR vans would be attending fetes, but it was not clear if they had been told before their fetes or in recent days since the uproar over the fines.

"Access Canberra has engaged with the ACT Education Directorate, and, through them the Catholic Education Office, and the Association for Independent Schools (which Canberra Girls Grammar School is a member) to advise that LPR vans would be attending schools during school terms and during events held by schools," he said.

And as for the fete infringements being waived, Mr Green suggested there would be no deviation from the current process in which individuals can appeal a fine.

"There are guidelines in place for the withdrawal of infringements and each matter is assessed on a case by case basis," he said.

"There will not be a broad review of parking infringements issued at recent school fetes. Access Canberra will assess individual infringement withdrawal applications as they are received from individuals."

Mr Green reiterated that "revenue is not one of the aspects we consider when we decide where to undertake parking patrols''.

"Access Canberra prioritises the safety of our most vulnerable road users, especially children crossing roads and walking on footpaths around schools. It’s important we maintain their safety by identifying instances of illegal and unsafe parking,'' he said.

"......Parents and citizens are reminded to obey the appropriate parking signage in the area, which is in place for the safety of road users. We don’t want to see a situation where people are parking unlawfully which results in a child or citizen being injured or killed. Parking further away, leaving earlier, and taking the time to walk are all useful tips for Canberrans to consider when attending an event.''

A Canberra Girls Grammar School spokesman said last week it too was concerned with the safety of patrons to its fete which was why it closed the school campus to traffic.
