As of August 31, there were 738,076 people registered to vote in the Brisbane City Council area, with those voters spread across 26 wards.

The City of Brisbane Act 2010 states there should be between 26,587 and 32,395 voters in each ward, with 29,541 the Brisbane average.

A recent review of the wards revealed Chandler fell narrowly short of the quota, while The Gabba slightly exceeded it.

There are 26,563 enrolments in Chandler ward and 32,639 for The Gabba.

Council chief executive Colin Jensen wrote to the Electoral Commission of Queensland and Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe on September 11 to declare the discrepancy.

A council spokesman said, under the City of Brisbane Act, the council must advise the ECQ and the minister of the number of electors in each council ward by October 1, two years in advance of the quadrennial council election.

“The Electoral Commission is then required to determine if a ward boundary review is required and what form it might take,” he said.

“The council plays no role in determining ward boundaries.”

The next council election is due in March 2020.

Deputy Mayor and Chandler councillor Adrian Schrinner said he did not expect a major review would be needed.

“New families are moving into Rochedale on a weekly basis and I have no doubt that it will correct itself within months – we are only talking about two dozen people,” he said.

“I am very confident Chandler will be within the quota prior to the 2020 election.”

There was a major review of the council wards done ahead of the 2016 election, with a major review usually occurring every second election period.

An ECQ spokeswoman said the Local Government Change Commission would assess any proposals about Brisbane wards put forward by the council or the Local Government Minister.

"However it is too early to speculate on potential outcomes as the assessment is yet to begin," she said.
