The 53-year-old man suffered critical head injuries about 4am on February 18 in Strathfield Street, Tarragindi, and detectives have identified two suspicious cars spotted in the street on CCTV footage.
The man, a regular runner in the area, was left with skull fractures, brain injuries, scratches to his lower legs, hand injuries consistent with a fall, significant bruising to his eye socket, a broken ankle and damage to one of his shoes that suggested serious impact.
In a statement on Wednesday, police said the victim died in Princess Alexandra Hospital on Sunday after being found lying semi-conscious in the roadway by residents.
Acting Detective Superintendent Mark Thompson said last month the two drivers' behaviour was "highly unusual" and they appeared to have been following each other.
"Strathfield Street is a cul-de-sac, in a leafy family suburb," he said.
"The dead end of the street leads into bushland that is often used by families and runners and certainly, in our mind, there is limited, if not no, reason for two vehicles to be moving along Strathfield Street in Tarragindi between 4am and 4.30am on a Monday.
"They were there for a reason. It might be completely innocuous, they might have been lost, but there are two people and maybe more who can assist with our inquiries."
The victim's injuries did not appear severe when residents found him and he was able to sit up and talk briefly but he did not say anything about what happened.
Acting Superintendent Thompson said he could have been in the roadway for up to 30 minutes before he was found and there was no evidence to suggest he had suffered a medical episode.
