Brisbane's deputy mayor Adrian Schrinner announced the vigil to pay tribute to the victims of the white supremacist attack in which 50 people died in Christchurch.
"We encourage as many people as possible from across Brisbane and south-east Queensland community to come along to show their respects and to support a tolerant Brisbane," Cr Schrinner said.
He said more details about the vigil would be announced later on Wednesday.
"We know there is so much support across the south-east Queensland community for Christchurch and the victims," he said.
"But we also want to show our support for the tolerant and multicultural community here in Brisbane as well.
"There are so many lessons to be learnt out of this and we want to make sure that Brisbane stays a tolerant, welcoming and friendly place."
Brisbane City Council will use the lights on the Story Bridge and City Hall to show respect at the Friday vigil.
A similar vigil for Christchurch will be held in Logan tonight.
Candles will be lit and prayers will be offered at the Logan Entertainment Centre from 5pm-6.30pm to allow people to pay their respects and show strength in the face of terror, the Logan City Council said.
All faiths are welcome and will be represented.
“Logan’s large New Zealand and Islamic communities have been rocked by this tragedy,” City of Logan acting mayor Cherie Dalley said.
“What happened in Christchurch is beyond deplorable – it is an act of hatred and violence that we utterly denounce - and we stand with our New Zealand and Muslim friends in grief and solidarity," she said.
“Logan is home to people from more than 217 different cultural backgrounds and we have a long tradition of people from all walks of life, all religions and all ages, living together in harmony."
Logan City Council has asked people to use the social media hashtag #LoganStandsTogether at Wednesday's event.
A Gold Coast service was held on Wednesday morning.
Logan's Christchurch vigil will start at 5pm at the Logan Entertainment Complex.
