The Bureau of Meteorology predicted Charleville would receive a rare thunderstorm on Tuesday afternoon and rain would continue in drought-hit Darling Downs farms. But meteorologist David Grant said despite this, Charleville did not receive enough rainfall to relieve the drought-declared area.

"Since we’ve had an unsettled couple of days through a good chunk of Queensland, there have been a few thunderstorms in Charleville in the last few afternoons," he said.

"A whole 24 hours to 9am this morning, there was only five millimetres recorded at Charleville and with a storm today there was only a further two millimetres so it's not a great deal."

Mr Grant said the south-east should buckle up for another unsettled week, with showers and storms expected to continue for the next few days.

"It probably will not be widespread compared to what we had last week but it will remain humid with showers ahead."

Mr Grant said other areas in Queensland did not receive enough rainfall because the storms were "hit and miss in nature".

"There’s a large area of southern Queensland that has missed out on rainfall in recent months," he said.

"It's been only affecting very small pockets of inland Queensland, essentially there has been no widespread rainfall."

Jimbour district farmer St John Kent experienced a bittersweet end to the hailstorm on Thursday: he received the most rainfall since February but his crop was destroyed in the process.

Mr Kent, with his wife Edwina, farm 2000 hectares in partnership with Brett and Helen McLaren, on the Jimbour plains.

Until late September, their last significant rainfall was 120 millimetres in February.

The storm that ripped through their property, Coondarra, dumped more than 50 millimetres of rain and hail, which destroyed 200ha of chickpeas.

Mr Kent said it was over in 10 minutes.

“Our rain gauges were smashed at the 50 millimetres mark so this fall is just a guess and our on-farm weather station recorded wind speeds of 110km/hour,” he said.

“We have effectively written off our chickpea crop, but this storm has put us back into the business of farming.”

He said they would plant sorghum in the next week, with their rainfall since late September now totalling 150 millimetres.

Veresdale Scrub dairy farmer and grain business owner Brad Teese said the rain received in the Scenic Rim had been a godsend, with 125 millimetres falling in five days.

"We've been praying for this heavy rain like you wouldn't believe," he said.

"We were getting nothing, no rain at all and it's been dry the whole way through the year until now.

"There's been no grass to pasture and we've been irrigating and planting crops, hoping it would be OK.

"Hay was impossible to find and grain prices were high because of the weather conditions so all of our commodities have been shipped from South Australia and Western Australia."

Mr Teese said farmers and cattle owners were selling their cattle just to make ends meet, with no relief.

Mr Teese, who sells grain to farmers across the state, said central Queensland was still doing it tough with the minimal rain they had been receiving.

"Darling Downs is just about out of hay and grain but for central Queensland, it's just non-existent," he said.

"People have been planting a few things but all have resulted in failed crops because there's no rain to save it."
