The RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter was called to the crash on Sarina-Marlborough Road at Lotus Creek about 7.30pm on Monday night, after the 55-year-old man's ute came off the road and careened into a tree on his way home.
The man had been checking cattle two kilometres down the road and was driving home when the crash occurred a short distance from his driveway. He was found by a passing driver.
The rescue helicopter flew in a doctor and critical care paramedic to the cattle property's airstrip close by and attended the scene.
RACQ CQ Rescue air crewman Shane Bargh said it appeared the man’s head had smashed into both the front and back windscreen of the single cab ute, leaving the imprint in the glass.
The man's his chest and ribs were crushed by the impact of the steering wheel, but he was still conscious when emergency services arrived, telling paramedics he couldn't remember how the accident happened.
He was flown to the Mackay Base Helicopter in a stable condition just after 9.30pm.
