Forecasters warned the storms could have been the worst of the week on Wednesday, after a man suffered an electric shock when lightning hit his home north-west of Brisbane on Tuesday.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned a "supercell" storm could lash the region on Wednesday after heavy rain, strong winds and lightning hit the Moreton Bay, Somerset, Toowoomba, South Burnett, Gympie and Sunshine Coast areas in the previous 24 hours.

Thunderstorms had been detected on the weather radar near Yarraman, about 180 kilometres north-west of Brisbane, which was moving towards the east, according to a BOM warning at 4.45pm.

The ranges between Gympie and Murgon, the area north-west of Gympie, the area east of Nanango and the area north of Gympie were also expected to be affected by 5.50pm.

But severe storm warnings were cancelled about 7.30pm and by 8pm, the systems had moved offshore.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Tony Webb said Brisbane could still see a storm but most of the activity was in the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.

"We may see a storm later tonight as the south-easterly change pushes up to Brisbane overnight," he said.

"Most of the activity was just moved offshore in the Gold Coast and another cell went through the Sunshine Coast."

On Tuesday afternoon, paramedics were called to treat a man who had been shocked while using his phone charger at his Biarra home, 112 kilometres north-west of Brisbane.

"A male patient in his 50s had suffered an electric shock. He was reportedly using a phone charger and lightning struck the premises. That patient was transported to St Andrews Hospital in a stable condition for observation," Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor Matt Hunter said.

"We were also called out to a residence in Coominya [36 kilometres south of Biarra] where another residence was struck by lightning. We assessed all of the occupants and no one was injured."

Earlier on Wednesday, BOM senior forecaster Michael Knepp said damaging winds, large hailstones and the worst storms of the week were possible on Wednesday.

Meteorologist Lauren Pattie added that a supercell storm could hit the region.

"During the late afternoon and early evening, we expect more storms to develop, which have the potential to be severe," she said.

"There is also the potential for a supercell, which is when a storm rotates and can last for many hours. These are more likely to produce large hail, heavy rain and damaging winds."

The Sunshine Coast copped the brunt of Tuesday's storms.

Tewantin, west of Noosa, received the highest rainfall in the 24 hours to 9am Wednesday, with 80 millimetres.

Nearby Lake Cooroibah recorded 70 millimetres in almost 22 hours and Coolum, on the Sunshine Coast, received 70 millimetres in 19 hours.

Bureau meteorologist David Crock said Tuesday's storms formed between Toowoomba and Kingaroy and moved east toward the coast.

"There were reports of trees down in Nambour and we had a warning out at one stage for a cell near Cherbourg [inland from Noosa] for very large hail more than four centimetres in size," he said.

"We're expecting pretty late storms today. It's a bit of a weird situation actually.

"There is a south-easterly change moving up the coast from NSW but we should see plenty of storms develop thanks to an inland trough in the Darling Downs at the moment."

Mr Crock said all the ingredients for more severe storms - atmospheric conditions, wind and moisture - were present on Wednesday.

"Like any spring storm day, they tend to form on a trough or the high ground out west and steer over the city," he said.

"It's pretty likely we will see storms make it through to the city and some could be severe."

Brisbane hit a top of 28.5 degrees at 12.18pm on Wednesday. There was a very high chance of showers during the late afternoon and evening with the chance of gusty and potentially severe storms during the afternoon and evening.

On Monday, trees came crashing down, two-centimetre hailstones fell, strong winds swept through and more than 25,000 flashes of lightning were recorded across south-east Queensland.

The highest rainfall totals were 47 millimetres in Lower Springbrook, inland from Coolangatta, and 36 millimetres fell in Samford Valley, north-west of Brisbane.

An estimated 3500 Energex customers lost power on Monday night across several regions within the south-east, and some were still waiting to be reconnected on Tuesday morning.
