A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said the "elderly" man suffered head and chest injuries after the fall at Crows Nest, about 50 kilometres north of Toowoomba.
The man was found unconscious in a dry creek bed by his wife after he didn't return to their house at about 10am.
RACQ LifeFlight said it was believed he slipped off a cliff, falling about three metres into the gully.
Emergency services including paramedics and police attended and he was taken to a local cricket field by paramedics, where the RACQ LifeFlight helicopter attended.
The man was airlifted to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition at midday, a QAS spokesman said.
