Annette Leech has been to every Sunsuper Riverfire firework show since she was 12 years old and said Saturday night's extravaganza above the Brisbane River was a close second to the 2010 display, which featured the final F-111 dump-and-burn ahead of the aircraft's retirement.

Ms Leech said she fell in love with Riverfire the first year she saw it, and is still a loyal viewer at 31 years old and has introduced her two young children to the annual firework show.

"I begged my parents to go after the first time, then it was a fun thing to do with friends during my teens and now it has become a tradition with my own little family," she said.

"I still remember the first time I went, I was sitting underneath the Story Bridge with my feet dangling over the Brisbane River.

"It has definitely become busier every year and the fireworks have improved over the years. I really miss the F-111 dump and burn, but the Growler does a good job still.

"Last night was fantastic, we had the best view from the Sunsuper party and the jets came right past us – it was amazing. It was second only to the last F-111 dump-and-burn display."

Half-a-million revellers turned out for the Riverfire fireworks display after the weather bureau cancelled its two severe weather warnings with 90 minutes to spare.

The event drew an estimated 500,000 people to the river’s edge and attracted an at-home television audience of more than 400,000 across Queensland via Channel Nine’s coverage.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Michael Knepp said there were no signs of any wet weather developing around Brisbane at 6pm, meaning he was confident those who had lined the Brisbane River for the Riverfire climax would not have the occasion dampened by rain or storms.

"The worst of the storms were to the north and south of Brisbane," he said on Saturday.

"Brisbane had only a little bit of rain and a few rumbles of thunder and lightning.

"There were reports of hail in Narangba, Highvale and Coomera, but we didn't see any damaging winds or heavy rain."

The forecast had been very much doom and gloom for the majority of Saturday, with BoM saying large hailstones and damaging winds were "likely" for much of the south-east corner.

A general severe storm warning had been in place until about 5.30pm for the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Ipswich, Beenleigh, Beaudesert, Jimboomba, Mount Tamborine, Redcliffe and Springbrook.

A more specific warning had also been in place for parts of the Moreton Bay region after a severe storm cell hit the Moreton Bay region with hail the size of a 20¢ piece reported in Narangba.

Queensland Rail remained confident that all Riverfire trains would run smoothly, despite an increase in the number of train crews not turning up to their shifts during the past few days.

The Fair Work Commission ruled on Friday night that the Rail Tram & Bus Union and its delegates had organised for workers to participate in "unprotected industrial action" in recent days and ordered the union not to organise for more crews to take days off at very short notice.
