The toddler was pulled from a private pool at Surfers Paradise just before 4pm on Friday afternoon.

Paramedics said the child was conscious and breathing when they arrived, but remained in a serious condition when transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital.

It is believed CPR was performed on the toddler before paramedics arrived.

It is not yet known if the child was holidaying at the popular tourism destination.

It came hours after Surf Life Saving Queensland announced a new campaign to curb drownings in the state.
