Despite it being the middle of winter, July was a month with an average temperature nearly 2 degrees higher than the long-term average.

In the second half of the month, some locations reported their highest temperatures on record, including Gatton, Amberley and Archerfield airport.

While the south-east, south and west of Queensland saw very little rain, the northern interior and coast recorded above-average rain.

With clear, sunny days and little cloud cover, south-east Queensland reported cool, frosty nights that were below the average temperatures arrived in mid-July after some very warm nights at the beginning of the month.

A cool, dry air mass was recorded through much of July, creating cooler-than-usual days in the west and south of Queensland.

Queensland's coldest night in July was minus 6.3 degrees at Oakey Aero, and its hottest day 34.8 degrees at Kowanyama Airport in the far north.

Storms and showers ran across southern Queensland in the first week of July thanks to an inland surface trough and an upper-level disturbance, while a south-easterly airflow brought more moderate rain to the north tropical coast.

Further south, Sydney also recorded temperatures more than 3 degrees above the median average in July.

Brisbane's first day of August recorded temperatures of 24 degrees, with temperatures expected to reach 27 degrees over the weekend.
