The Rescue 500 helicopter and a Queensland Fire and Emergency Service technical rescue team returned to Mount Barney, about 120 kilometres south-west of Brisbane, on Sunday.

The rescuers were still working on their plan to recover the body at midday and they were expected to try to winch someone down from the helicopter to collect the fallen climber.

Police were expected to provide a more detailed update on the situation at 2pm.

Rescue crews found the 50-year-old Logan man's body about 5.50pm on Saturday after he fell 300 metres while abseiling down the climbing route on the eastern cliff face, known as Governor.

Police said the fall was reported about 12.50pm and the man's two fellow climbers were winched to safety by the Rescue 500 helicopter about 5pm.

The man and woman aged in their 30s had become trapped after seeing their climbing partner fall and were believed to be uninjured, according to paramedics.

The cliff face is popular with sport climbers and it is understood the mountain was open to the public on Sunday.

The cause of the fall is still unknown, but a report will be prepared for the coroner.
