People from Britain had the biggest stake in Queensland, well ahead of other countries, with foreign-owned interests in 2.86 million hectares as at June 30, 2018.
The number of hectares owned by the Dutch surged by more than 59 per cent in just two years, while British interests increased by 29 per cent and Chinese ownership by 6 per cent.
In terms of the total land owned as at June 30, 2018, the Dutch came in second behind the British, owning 1.82 million hectares, followed by China with 1.71 million.
Interestingly, the Bahamas, the US and then Guernsey, a self-governing island in the English Channel with a population of 63,000, round out the top six nationalities for total land area owned by foreign interests.
The Dutch overtook the Chinese for the amount of land they owned in 2017 and remained in second place.
However, people from China made by far the most expensive acquisitions in Queensland in 2017-18, at $1.41 billion, followed by Singapore with $391 million and then the US with $350 million.
The figures were detailed in the latest annual report on the administration of the Foreign Ownership of Land Register Act.
Brisbane was the most attractive council for big-spending foreign buyers, with $2.15 billion in acquisitions in 2017-18, followed by the Gold Coast ($643 million) and Moreton Bay ($113 million).
There were 10,433 land parcels in the Brisbane area with some level of foreign ownership as at June 30, followed by the Gold Coast with 9245 and then Isaac Regional Council, which covers coal mines in the Bowen Basin and communities such as Clermont, with 3411 land parcels.
The Bulloo local government area topped the list for most hectares foreign-owned, with 1.40 million hectares, followed by Barcoo (1.33 million) and Diamantina (1.78 million).
There were 142 countries of origin with foreign interests in Queensland land.
However, there appeared to be a slowdown in international buying.
Title registry records indicated foreign interests invested more than $3.55 billion in Queensland property during 2017-18, a decrease of $0.7 billion from the previous year.
Property Council of Australia Queensland executive director Chris Mountford said blamed the decrease on the state government's foreign investment tax increases, which imposed an extra 7 per cent stamp duty on overseas buyers.
"Foreign investment in Queensland property has been a key economic driver over many decades, and has been a crucial source of funding for many job-creating projects," he said.
In 2016-17 about 6.1 per cent of Queensland land was foreign-owned, compared with 6.6 per cent last year.
A "foreign person" was defined as people who are not Australian citizens, a body formed outside of Australia, a corporation in which a foreigner or foreign corporation owns a controlling interest and a corporation in which two or more foreigners hold an aggregate controlling interest.
