Brisbane City Council said some forms of charging for electric vehicles could take an extended amount of time.

"The impacts on the availability of on-street parking spaces could be significant if on-street charging [for electric vehicles] is used," the council said in a submission to a Queensland parliamentary inquiry into transport technology.

The council said developers may also be reticent to include electric vehicle charging infrastructure in new developments, due to the technology not being well understood or taken up by the public.

However, its submission said the council could potentially play a role in encouraging the uptake of electric vehicles through the installation of recharge stations at some council facilities.

There are currently public electric vehicle charging stations in the King George Square car park and for council fleet vehicles at council offices.

Petrol station owners may also convert to fast electric vehicle charging facilities, in additional traditional fuel outlets, as the demand for traditional petrol reduced, the council said.

Queensland also has the world's longest electric vehicle super highway, designed to allow motorists to travel from the Gold Coast to Cairns and Brisbane to Toowoomba.

The inquiry, being led by the Transport and Public Works Committee, is investigating the readiness of the Queensland transport network for electric vehicles and driverless cars.

It is also looking into how technology is affecting employment in the transport industry, particularly in the food delivery area, which has seen the explosion of apps such as Uber Eats and Deliveroo.

In mid-2018, there were 2.95 million petrol cars registered in Queensland, 19,873 hybrid electric vehicles and 798 fully electric vehicles, such as the Nissan Leaf or Tesla Model S.

However, the number of electric vehicles in the state increased by more than 70 per cent between mid-2016 and mid-2018.

Brisbane City Council said there was a general agreement that there was likely to be a significant adoption of automated or driverless cars after 2040, which may increase congestion levels if they are predominantly owned by individuals, and reduce public transport use.

Driverless cars would also lead to reduced needs for parking, which would lead to a drop in parking revenue for local governments, the council said.

Over time, the increasing use of electric vehicles and driverless cars could also result in the reduction of some jobs, including drivers and mechanics.
