A report by the Queensland Competition Authority, released on Tuesday, showed the benefits of shopping around, with households saving on average $65 a quarter when switching from a standing offer to a market offer.

People who switched from the highest standing offer to the lowest market offer in the September quarter could have reduced their bill by $217, or 42 per cent.

Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said power prices had been on a downward trend since the Queensland government introduced the Powering Queensland Plan in mid-2017.

"Overall, consumers can now save $260 a year, on average, by shopping around," he said.

"The report also shows small business can save around $83 on their power bills by shopping around.

"QCA's September quarter report demonstrates that the Palaszczuk government is on track to our commitment to a two-year cap on power price rises to average inflation. In fact, we are doing even better."

Retailers' standing-offer bills were generally higher than their market-offer bills in the September quarter.

For a typical residential customer, standing-offer bills ranged from $358 (Powershop) to $512 (QEnergy).

Market-offer bills ranged from $295 (Click Energy) to $432 (Mojo Power).

The lowest market-offer available in the market was Click Energy's Pearl offer of $295.

The conditional 27 per cent discount off the total bill when the bill was paid by the due date and the account was not in credit, along with a $50 bill credit on the first bill or a $50 Coles eGift card made it the cheapest offer.

However, the Click Pearl deal was only available for two days - September 3 and 4 - in the quarter.

Dr Lynham has asked the QCA to provide quarterly reports on prices for residential and small business electricity customers in south-east Queensland until June 30, 2019.
