In October 2016, the opening of the Redcliffe Peninsula Line led to hundreds of services being cancelled due to a shortage of available train drivers.
After rolling cancellations, the Strachan Inquiry revealed a Queensland Rail preference to operate with a 5 per cent to 10 per cent under-supply of train crew, with a consequent reliance on unsustainable levels of overtime in the lead-up to the new train timetable.
While Queensland Rail attempts to hire more train drivers to fill the gap, it rolled out school holiday timetables from December 2016, with reduced services.
However, for the first time since the driver supply issue affected services in 2016, services will continue as normal during the upcoming June-July school holiday.
Transport Minister Mark Bailey said recent planning, and assurances by Queensland Rail and the Citytrain Response Unit, showed net increases in train crew supply meant services could continue as normal from June 30 to July 15, an identified "stress period".
"We've always said fixing the trains wouldn't happen overnight but Queensland Rail's ongoing and consistent work over the past 18 months to fast track train crew recruitment and training and implement the Strachan Inquiry recommendations has seen reliability improve, cancellations decrease and now we're starting to see some incremental improvements," he said.
Earlier this month it was revealed Queensland Rail had a net increase of 38 new drivers since October 2016.
There were also a net increase of 97 train guards.
The Strachan Inquiry said 200 drivers and 200 guards should be hired to restore reliability to the timetable.
Mr Bailey said there was still a lot more work to be done.
"[We] are also continuing to actively listen and monitor customer feedback coming through regarding Queensland Rail's timetable and we will be working to implement additional services once Queensland Rail is in a position to sustainably do so," he said.
When the first summer school holiday timetable was introduced, then-transport minister Stirling Hinchliffe said it reflected reduced passenger demand.
"While patronage drops by more than 25 per cent at this time of year, services will only be reduced by 11 per cent across the network and the majority of changes will be outside of peak," he said in December 2016.
