Giants ruck coach Mumford has backed Lobb to fill the void left by Dawson Simpson after injury forced his season to a premature end as third-placed GWS look to lock up a finals spot.

It is a rousing endorsement as Lobb and the injury-plagued Giants prepare to face the Adelaide Crows at Manuka Oval in Canberra on Saturday night.

Mumford laughed the club's injury worries must leave coach Leon Cameron wondering what he has done wrong, but the Giants have received a huge boost with Tim Taranto, Dylan Shiel, Sam Reid and Ryan Griffen all set to return from injury against the Crows.

Shiel looms as a massive inclusion for GWS' midfield battle, and Mumford believes they have the perfect man to steer the ship in Lobb.

"I think he’s got it in him. He’s got the ability to be one of the best ruckmen in the league when he gets it all right," Mumford said.

"He’s been put back in there, I guess not by choice, but he’s back in there now and with his attributes, his strength, he’s able to run and jump - a lot of the things I couldn’t do - he’s well ahead of wherever I used to be.

"When he gets it all right he is a very hard ruckman to beat. It’s going to be good for him and we should see him playing some good footy.

"It’s going to be a good challenge for him, he hasn't played a lot in the ruck this year since the start of the year. It’s a challenge I know he’s looking forward to and he is certainly going to have his hands full this weekend with Sam Jacobs.

"We’ll probably see a bit like what he have over the last few weeks with Tommo [Adam Tomlinson] being in there a little bit, Wardy [Callan Ward] being in there a little bit.

"I think it will probably be the three of them sharing the load, I think Lobby will do a fair percentage of it though."

Mumford concedes he was shattered when Simpson went down injured during the Giants' mammoth win over the Carlton Blues last week.

He followed Brett Deledio, Toby Greene and Sam Taylor to the injury ward in the club's most costly win of the season.

But Mumford, who launched a Giants community program at Holy Spirit primary school in Canberra on Wednesday, is confident the incoming cogs will be able to fill the void seamlessly as the Giants look to continue their stunning turnaround that has bore eight wins in their past nine games.

"As disappointing as it is to lose a few, we have got a few there waiting and ready to come back in," Mumford said.

"We’ve been able to show throughout this year that when someone does go out, others come in and they’re able to play their role. Especially over the last eight weeks of football, we’ve really turned it around.

"We’re really embracing the contest. I think footy is quite a simple game, your contested ball and tackling in big games really stand up.

"We’ve seen over the last couple of years is teams that want to tackle more and want to win every contest are the teams that go on and win the competition.

"Having that real drive to want to win each contest, to want to make each tackle, to want to put on pressure and to chase, I think that’s been the big turning point for us."
