Moore and chairman Ned Coten sent word around basketball circles on Tuesday about Moore’s departure which will come at the BA annual general meeting on October 27.

It’s not known what his next move will be but Moore is tipped to remain in sport as he has worked at Sports Australia, formerly the Australian Sports Commission, and some AFL clubs among his previous roles.

Moore’s departure comes as basketball in Australia heads towards what many believe is the most important 12 months in the game’s history with the Opals at the FIBA Women’s World Cup right now, a record number of Australians playing in the NBA and the Boomers to host Team USA in Melbourne next year and play in the FIBA World Cup in China.

BA's general manager of leagues and competitions Paul Maley will take on the acting chief executive role until a replacement is found.

BA chairman Ned Coten said Moore had made a terrific contribution.

"He has played a major role in helping steer BA to improved financial stability and securing an historic commercial deal which will see USA Basketball play Australia before more than 100,000 fans in Melbourne in August 2019," Coten said.

"The BA Board and Anthony have mutually agreed that now is the right time for a new chief executive to take the business into its next phase of growth. The board thanks Anthony and wish him well in his future roles.

“BA is better placed for the challenges of the new era due to Anthony’s efforts."

Moore said it was a privilege and pleasure to be the BA chief executive.

“It has been both a privilege and my absolute pleasure to lead the sport I love," Moore said.

"I’m very proud of BA’s achievements under my leadership and want to ensure our executive team, board and state associations are in the best possible position for the challenges ahead.

"I also want to thank the board for their support and guidance to me as CEO. It’s been a great experience to lead through this time of development and success for the sport of basketball.

“We have built the reputation of Basketball Australia here at home and internationally. In part this is thanks to staging the 2016 Olympic qualifiers at Rod Laver Arena - returning basketball to a big arena. The sold-out double header of 15,000 fans for our Opals and Boomers set the benchmark for our ambitions.

"My hope is that next year’s Boomers vs USA Basketball games will write basketball’s page in the history of Australian sport. I now look forward to watching that as a basketball fan.”

Moore has played a pivotal role in rebuilding the business at Basketball Australia which was facing financial shortfalls when he signed on in August 2014 while the Boomers were struggling for exposure outside of Olympic Games and World Cups.

Moore has played a key role in improving the business and helping boost the profile of the Boomers who played in front of a sellout Rod Laver Arena crowd in a Olympic qualifier against New Zealand in 2015 alongside the Opals.

The Boomers profile has also been boosted by the number of Australians in the NBA led by Ben Simmons and the substancial growth of the NBL under Larry Kestelman.

The much-anticipated clash between the Boomers and Team USA at Marvel Stadium next August is considered another major achievement while BA say their finances have made major improvements during the past four years and should improve further with the expected windfall from the USA games next year.

Basketball Australia has faced some criticism for its running of the WNBL and promotion of the Opals from some in the sport with the national team still struggling for exposure despite having world level superstars like Liz Cambage and a long history of success.

Earlier in his tenure the national body also took criticism for its management of the WNBL as the league struggled to retain sponsors or find a television broadcaster following ABC ending their partnership.

But the league has made gains in the past 12 months with Chemist Warehouse now a naming rights sponsor of the Australia’s women's teams and the WNBL while Fox Sports will enter its second season broadcasting the league with SBS to show a number of games this season as well.
