The fast bowler is one of four Australian-capped players set to play for the Prime Minister's XI against South Africa in a 50-over showdown at Manuka Oval on October 31.

Sandhu's international career was fleeting but his two one-day international appearances as cover for Mitchell Johnson in 2015 provided genuine glimpses of promise.

If wearing the green and gold again wasn't still on his bucket list then Sandhu probably wouldn't have made the move to Tasmania.

If he hadn't made the move to play for the Tigers, he wouldn't have claimed a staggering seven-wicket haul in the domestic one-day final which encompassed his first career hat-trick to boot.

If that hadn't happened, he might not have been in the position to replicate those heroics against the fourth-best one-day outfit in the world - but it did.

"I’ll be going okay if I do that I reckon," Sandhu laughed.

"I’ll be looking forward to that game and it’ll be a nice little test to see where I’m at. I’ve played two of them before so it’s almost kind of a checkpoint game to see where you’re at and what you need to work on, and how much more improvement you need to be playing at the highest level.

"[The one-day final] was really good on a personal note, I never thought I would get a seven-for and a hat-trick in the same game let alone a final.

"That was pretty amazing and I looked back on it after that game and I was pretty happy with myself. But there are still things I would like to do, I would like to be in the Shield team so I can’t really just rest on that performance.

"I need to keep trying to get better and keep improving every game."

Sandhu joined Tasmania this year for a fresh start after his five-season stint with the NSW Blues came to an abrupt end.

Born and bred in Sydney, the 25-year-old concedes leaving Sydney was the toughest decision of his life but the chance to rekindle a relationship with Tasmanian coach Adam Griffiths was an opportunity he couldn't pass up.

His career on the Apple Isle got off to a flying start during the one-day competition but Sandhu is refusing to rest on his laurels.

Now he has turned his attention to breaking into the Tigers' Sheffield Shield side as they look to make amends for last season's final defeat.

How? By taking bags of wickets for Tasmania in the Futures League, in grade cricket and in the Prime Minister's XI's showdown with South Africa.

"It was hard, leaving family behind, my loved ones," Sandhu said.

"I started my career at Cricket NSW and never thought I would leave, I probably never wanted to leave if you’d have asked me when I first started playing for the Blues.

"I felt like it was something I had to do at this time and get a fresh start again. I didn’t want to miss out on a new opportunity to try something new and to try to see how it works out.

"I just need to put my best foot forward [to be in Shield calculations], be prepared and be ready to go just like I was with the one-day tournament. I wasn’t in the initial squad, so I was training and just preparing and getting ready for whenever I got the call-up."
