The tiny crowds were always the same people - family, a few friends and a handful of cricket tragics.

Now the rapid evolution of the Women's Big Bash League will see the competition played in its own window next season in what ACT Meteors and Sydney Sixers star Burns dubs a huge endorsement for women's cricket.

A capacity crowd of 5368 jammed into Drummoyne Oval for the WBBL final and hundreds more were turned away at the gate - watching the game from a vantage point outside the fence line. All while the game was played at what Alyssa Healy dubbed an "odd" 10am timeslot.

"I joked on social media this week saying I think my family made up about 40 per cent of ticket sales, but I reckon they made up 100 per cent of ticket sales back in the day," Burns said.

"It was funny, you’d go to a game and you’d actually know every single person that came to watch. Most of them were either parents, some kind of family members or enthusiasts that you already knew.

"That was only four years ago, so to see how much it has grown and to see the support from everyone in the community has been awesome.

"With the Big Bash coming off the back of the Aussie girls doing so well and winning the World Cup over in the West Indies, that gave it a boost right from the get-go.

"Those two semi-finals obviously helped with getting some people down there and getting some people sitting up and paying a bit more attention to women’s cricket than they have done previously.

"It shows women can put on just as good a show as men. Hopefully that can transition to next year. It’ll be interesting to see how that translates to people coming out to watch, it’s only just behind us but excited for next season."

Player of the tournament Ellyse Perry has long been one of cricket's biggest drawcards and the record-breaking Sydney Sixers all-rounder's influence on bumper finals crowds cannot be understated.

It was the first time the WBBL finals had been played as standalone fixtures, with locations previously dictated by the host teams of the men's finals.

ACT Meteors and Melbourne Stars all-rounder Erin Osborne says the move away from playing alongside the men's competition shows "we don’t really need to hold their hands anymore to get crowds to our game".

BBL chief Kim McConnie says the plan is for matches to begin as soon as October and be played across Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays to capitalise on crowds given school will be in session throughout a seven-week season.

"It’ll be interesting. We saw the semi-finals and the final attract good crowds which is really exciting for our game moving forward," Osborne said.

"It’s nice to know that we’re capable of standing alone, whilst it’s nice to be a part of the Big Bash with the men, it’s also nice to know we don’t really need to hold their hands anymore to get crowds to our game."

Such is the quantum leap women's cricket has made, the ICC and Cricket Australia have set their sights on shattering the record crowd figure for a women's sporting event at next year's Twenty20 World Cup final.

It's an ambitious goal given 90,185 attended the 1999 women's soccer World Cup final between the US and China at California's Rose Bowl - but women's cricket continues to silence the naysayers.
