Canberra United has recruited Gold Coast striker Meaghan McElligott to help fill the hole left by former W-League golden-boot winner Michelle Heyman this season.
It's a chance for McElligott to start her semi-professional career after the Brisbane Roar refused to get her an opportunity to play in the competition.
So the 23-year-old is intent on repaying Canberra United and is unfazed at the daunting task of trying to fill Heyman's shoes.
Heyman, who has scored 62 goals in her 10-year W-League career, has joined Adelaide United this season.
"Michelle Heyman is like an idol to me, so if I could ever be half compared to her I would be flattered," McElligott said.
"Hopefully I can have a successful season and be a player like her. But I definitely think that's why [Canberra coach] Heather Garriock got me down here.
"I wouldn't say I'm nervous. I don't think I'm here to fill her boots, I think I'm here to play my game and show them what I've got. I'm just excited to be at this level."
McElligott secured a contract after a two-week trial period in Canberra and her goal-scoring resume made it almost impossible for Garriock to ignore her.
She scored 31 goals in 17 games for Gold Coast United this year before switching to the Moreton Bay Jets and scoring another 19 goals in nine matches.
She spent the past two years training with the Roar, but was left out of their squad this year. It prompted her to take a chance on a move to Canberra and it paid off.
Garriock is close to finalising the rest of her squad, with Ellie Carpenter set to link with Canberra again when she finishes her duties with the Matildas in the coming weeks.
Canberra is also likely to sign two more international recruits, as well as filling an international guest-player spot this season.
McElligott is part of the Canberra rebuild after a changing of the guard in the playing ranks, including Ash Sykes moving into a coaching role.
She could partner with exciting Canberra junior Aoife Colvill, who scored 42 goals in 19 games in the Capital Football women's premier league this year.
"It is nice to be taken seriously by a club, and I want to enjoy my football and see where it can
take me from here," McElligott said.
"I'm stoked and I think I'm still a little bit in shock. It's so good to be given an opportunity. I'm so thankful Heather has seen something in me and I can't wait to prove myself at a W-League level.
"The timing off this couldn't come any better. I put all my eggs in this basket and it's turned out to be successful, which is awesome."
