A courier was lucky to have only minor injuries after his ute slammed into a tree, causing it to split in half more than 120 kilometres south-west of Mackay.

The 72-year-old Andergrove man was driving on Fitzroy Development Road near the town of Valkyrie when his vehicle left the road and hit the tree about 6am on Thursday.

RACQ CQ Rescue, with a doctor and critical care paramedic on board, flew to the scene and landed in a paddock.
The man suffered minor chest and head injuries and was transported to Mackay Airport.
He was then taken to Mackay Base Hospital by ambulance in a stable condition about 9am.
