Brendan Berichon, who is wanted on domestic violence warrants, fled when police came to his home on Tuesday morning.
During the chase, he ran into bush areas at Pacific Pines, where a bushfire had been burning for the past few days.
A police spokesman said he had been spotted on Fletcher Crescent before running into the bush.
He said while police were patrolling the area, it was not a large-scale manhunt and there was no indication he was armed or dangerous to the public.
Mr Berichon rose to fame when he helped Abbott escape from a Wacol prison in 1997.
Abbott was dubbed the Postcard Bandit after media reports in the 1990s said he sent postcards of his travels to pursuing police.
