Bolton is riding a wave of hometown form at the Spring Valley Golf Club in Melbourne, emerging as a contender for the amateur title after a four-under par round on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old has been back in the capital during his break from Newberry College in South Carolina, but his time with family has been far from a holiday.

Bolton has played 18 rounds at Royal Canberra since returning home, accumulating the stunning total of 94-under par to give him a confidence boost for the amateur titles and his last semester in the United States.

He is booked to fly back to Newberry on Friday, but he is preparing to pay the fee to change flights if he gets through the first matchplay round in Melbourne on Thursday.

"My golf over the past couple of years has been getting better, but it was sort of out of the blue when I got home [in December] that I started playing great," Bolton said.

"My coach has let me stay back for a few more days but my flight is in for Friday ... if I keep going I'll have to pay to push it back but I'm happy with that."

Bolton is one of several Canberra juniors chasing success in Melbourne. He is tied at five-under par with fellow Royal Canberra player Jordan Ayre, while Kris Cole, Adam Thorp, Josh Armstrong and Aaron Maxwell are also in the field.

Royal Canberra is becoming a breeding ground for professionals of the future, with Bolton's impressive statistics following a record-breaking 10-under par round by Tom O'Rourke, who is also a US college student.

Bolton, a golfing late bloomer, hopes to play at the US amateur titles this year and has been picking the brain of Canberra professional Brendan Jones in the hope of making the leap from college to the full-time circuit in the coming years.

"My godfather had been trying to get me into golf for a few years and I told him there was no chance because it was boring," Bolton said.

"It took me about two weeks to even hit the ball. Maybe I got hooked because it was hard ... I'd love to go professional, that's the dream. I'll play as many amateur events as I can first."

Meanwhile, Matt Millar will begin his 2019 campaign against US Masters winner Sergio Garcia at the Singapore Open on Thursday.

Millar enjoyed the best season of his career last year after earning almost $250,000 in prize money and finishing second in the Australian order of merit.

But the 42-year-old believes this year could be even bigger, with two cracks at $10 million world golf championship tournaments locked into the calendar.

“I’m feeling good and am happy with how I’m hitting them. I’ve been playing quite well at home over the weekend then have practised well here,” Millar said.

“Touch wood I haven't lost anything over the break, I just need to conserve energy at my age with all these young blokes running around.

“But the biggest thing is to just keep thinking the way I’ve been thinking. If I can stay on top of that I don't see why this won’t be my best year, I’ve got plenty of chances to do something, that's for sure."

Millar will return to Canberra next week before embarking on a series of tournaments around Australia and New Zealand.
