The results of a postal ballot of members were announced at a special general meeting in the members' bar of the Brisbane CBD club on Wednesday evening.

The vote to expand membership to include women passed with 1405 voting in favour, while 1368 voted against.

In response to the vote, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk - now eligible for membership - said: "History. It's about time."

Club president Stuart Fraser said the postal ballot followed the most extensive consultation in club history.

"Members told us financial stability was the most important attribute of the club followed by affordable membership," he said.

"They told us to focus on increasing patronage and encouraging more people to join, especially our families.

"Members, in every age group and category, want to come to our club more.

"Forty per cent said they would come more often if we expanded membership to include women and a further 43 per cent would come just as much under a revised structure."

A total of 63 per cent of members participated in the ballot.

"The participation rate in this vote is the highest for a motion in Tattersall's Club history with votes received from as far away as Mawson Base in Antarctica," Mr Fraser said.

A vote to change the single-gender membership structure at Tattersall's was last defeated in 2006.

The club, which has 4800 members, has been canvassing the possibility of allowing women full membership in recent months.

In an email to members last month, Mr Fraser said the issue of women's membership continued to be raised because it had not been resolved.

He pointed to a survey of 1634 members that showed 57 per cent of people supported expanding membership to women, with 36 per cent disagreeing.

Mr Fraser said the Tattersall's Club was heavily subsidised by its ownership of the Tattersall's Arcade and leasing retail space.

"The model is not sustainable," he told ABC Radio Brisbane.

"If you don't evolve, your product is, you know, unfortunately, the society will move on without you."

Under the former rules, women could enter the club and use facilities such as the gym and pool if they held a "partner card", or attend a function if they were a guest.

Less than three hours before the result was announced, Mr Fraser emailed members to warn them against speaking to journalists, and complaining about the actions of an anonymous group calling itself "Tatt's Myths".

"Club members who promote their views via media outlets are in breach of club rules and show blatant disregard for their fellow members' rights to privacy," he said.

Tatt's Myths, which opposed the change, created a website and Facebook page where it helped "members navigate the various claims made to justify major structural changes and provide factual rebuttals to said claims", although the pages appeared to have been removed on Wednesday night.

Last week, Sydney's Tattersalls Club chairman Colin Dunn warned his interstate colleagues that people opposing change were fighting a losing battle.

"One thing I can say with absolute clarity is that if the vote is not approved, it is only a matter of time before it will be raised again," he said.

The Sydney club lifted the ban on women membership after a vote in 2013.

Prior to the vote, Ms Palaszczuk reiterated her position that her ministers would not be joining or attending any events at the club while the current eligibility rules stood.

"In a state that has a female premier, deputy premier, opposition leader and chief justice, a club that seeks to engage community leaders but bans women from being members is out of step with community sentiment," she said.

Traditionally, the Tattersall's Club, opened in 1865, issued "honorary membership" invitations to male MPs and ministers.

The Queensland Club remains men-only, while the Brisbane Women's Club and The Lyceum Club are women-only.

The Brisbane Club opened its doors to female members 20 years ago.
