Pine Rivers magistrate Trevor Morgan closed the court both times the case was mentioned this week, citing fears the accused, 26-year-old Sterling Free, could be at risk of a "public lynching".

Mr Free allegedly took the girl, 7, from the Kmart store at Westfield North Lakes on Saturday, took her to nearby bushland and brought her back to the store more than an hour later.

Following public backlash via social media, chief magistrate Ray Rinaudo assured the community the matter would be heard in an open court in the future.

Still, Mr Rinaudo backed Mr Morgan's decision.

"The magistrate clearly articulated his reasons to those in the courtroom before closing the court this morning," Mr Rinaudo said in a statement.

"As he said, there are cases which are exceptional, and he deemed this to be one ... he needed to be sensitive to the victim's interest, which in this case is very significant.

"He also said it was important to take into account the interests of the administration of justice in ensuring that the proceedings proceed according to the fundamental principle of fairness and the application of the rule of law.

"The public does have a right to know about a case that is strongly in the public interest but that must always be subject to other overriding considerations to be determined in each case by the court.

"The matter will be heard in open court, at some level, at the appropriate time as determined by the court's process."

The case was mentioned in court on Tuesday and Wednesday. Mr Free was charged with deprivation of liberty, taking a child for immoral purposes and indecent treatment of a child under 12.

Neither Pine Rivers Magistrates Court nor the Department of Justice could reveal when the matter would return to court, due to Mr Morgan backing the prosecution's move to keep the case from the public.

"It's also important I take into account the interests of the administration of justice and ensuring that proceedings proceed according to the fundamental principle of fairness and the application of the rule of law, and not by a public or social media lynching," Mr Morgan said on Wednesday.

"I also note there have been comments from politicians criticising the behaviour of police in not disclosing more information than had been disclosed earlier.

"I entirely support the view, the position taken by police, in not disclosing more information than has been.

"In my view, less information would have been more helpful than has already been disclosed."

Detectives who looked into the incident kept the case quiet for three days before publically releasing details and claim the delay was to protect the investigation.

Detective Superintendent Tony Fleming said he understood why questions were being raised, but officers were always confident their decision would not risk community safety.

"Obviously, when it first happened it wasn’t a child abduction, it was simply a mother couldn't find her daughter," he said.

"Police responded and the child came back but when some details came to light, it initiated an investigation into the person of interest.

"Sometimes when an incident happens, it is relatively clear upfront what has happened but this took a bit more work.

"We were satisfied that community safety was not going to be jeopardised and then we were able to get into a position of engaging with the suspect and commencing prosecution.

"There was always the issue of community safety and whether to go public at the time ... but we needed to find and speak to the person of interest and that was investigated over a couple of days."

Social media users have threatened the accused's life and shared his profile.
