We can no longer take public service values for granted

The review of the Australian Public Service, announced recently by the Prime Minister, has been given a very wide brief and a short time frame to report in. At worst, it will produce a once-over-lightly analysis, with the bland cliches and generalities to which the review genre is unfortunately prone. At best, however, it has the potential to focus sharply on a few long-term problems and produce some far-reaching recommendations.
