The Canberra product knows he can make a statement on basketball's biggest stage - he just needs one team to take a shot on him during the 2018 draft on June 22 (AEST).

The 22-year-old rose to prominence on the United States college basketball scene at the University of California, Davis, but the ending to his college career was shrouded in controversy.

Moneke defines his college career as "the best time of my life and the worst time of my life at the same time" but the 198 centimetre, 101 kilogram forward insists he has matured as he moves one step closer to turning a dream into a reality.

"Ever since 2011, that’s when I started to take [the NBA draft] seriously, but back then it was just a dream," Moneke said.

"As years progressed it kept being a dream, then all of a sudden it turned into a goal. After we went to the tournament, it became a reality, something that I had to to truly dig in and make happen.

"I’m in that process right now and I believe it is very possible. It’s a huge month, it’s something I have been looking forward to for a while.

"I have prepared for everything and I understand that even if I don’t get drafted it’s not the end of the world.

"There are other avenues to get to where I want to go, and there are other options, short-term and long-term options that I am very comfortable with.

"I just know that if I am given a chance from the right team and the right organisation, that I will make the most of it and people will see what I can really do.

"When the draft happens people are going to get their contracts and hopefully I can get a contract to play in the summer league and we will go from there."

Moneke is being trained in California by Drew Hanlen, who trains an array of NBA players including Joel Embiid, while linking up with player agent and ANU graduate Anita Smith.

The goggle-wearing cult hero rose to prominence when he was named the Big West's most valuable player and led UC Davis to its March Madness debut in 2016-17.

But his 2017-18 season ended in tatters when he was suspended on February 3 after "violating team rules that govern conduct at the team's hotel".

He missed their late season run, missed playing on his senior night, and watched the Aggies bow out in the Big West conference semi-finals.

University officials and members of the Los Angeles Police Department refused to reveal details of their investigation into the incident, however all charges were quickly dismissed.

"College was the best time of my life and the worst time of my life at the same time," Moneke said.

"Most of it obviously was very positive and full of very great moments but it ended in a way that helped me to focus on what’s important and focus on staying true to myself.

"[It helped me focus on] not giving certain people that don’t have my best interests at heart, just keeping them away from me and keeping my circle small, and trusting in people who believe in me.

"Aside from that, it was a great time, it was a great experience and I’m thankful for it because I believe everything happens for a reason. God doesn’t make mistakes."

Moneke had a tryout with NBL champions Melbourne United which "could have gone better" as he battled allergies. He has his eye on playing in Europe if he isn't drafted, but he will never give up on his dream.

"Whatever opportunity would be best for me to make money and still be in the NBA eye where people can see me, and then next year I’ll come back and have a chance to continue to chase my dream," Moneke said.
