John Knaggs is chief executive of Sun Central, which is transforming a 58-hectare site at Maroochydore into a high-tech CBD for a future Sunshine Coast.

Mr Knaggs said Sun Central had met with Google Australia and would approach the internet giant again after hearing of the offer of assistance from Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.

"We are aware of those reports and Sun Central has had previous discussions with them," he said.

The NSW government this week rejected Google Australia's proposal for a new technology hub at the inner-Sydney suburb of Redfern.

On Wednesday, Ms Palaszczuk said her government had met with Google representatives last week and wanted to attract the company to Queensland.

The Premier said she understood Google Australia did not plan to shift from Sydney, despite the disappointment of being rejected by the NSW government.

"(But) if there was a move afoot, and if there were plans to move, of course we would be right in there to give it a go," Ms Palaszczuk said.

Mr Knaggs said he believed Google Australia wanted to remain in Sydney, but that would not stop the Sunshine Coast pushing its case.

"The Maroochydore city centre team would welcome them and other technology companies with open arms, because we think a 21st-century CBD and a real lifestyle region fits admirably with their own working ethic and reputation," he said.

Mr Knaggs said Sun Central had already approached Google Australia, prior to Ms Palaszczuk's comments on Wednesday.

"There's already stuff in the wires, so to speak," he said.

Mr Knaggs outlined progress on the $10 million in infrastructure that had already been laid underground as the new Sunshine Coast city was literally built from the ground up.

“In a sense you start with a blank sheet and in other senses you don’t,” Mr Knaggs said.

“So there are great things you start with like a ‘city grid’ and walkability and high standard of urban amenity that we all know and understand and design for, but at the same time those of us involved in managing assets get a shot at recalibrating our thinking.”

Sun Central is planning on 10-gigabit connection speed and Maroochydore remained hopeful the first broadband undersea communications cable would connect the new city directly to the world.

Mr Knaggs held his cards close to his chest on this issue.

“I am an optimistic person and I believe the glass is half-full,” he said.

In just 12 months, more than $10 million worth of infrastructure has gone underground, including the pipes for Australia’s first underground rubbish disposal network.

“There is, of course, the traditional infrastructure that any commercial city centre would need to operate,” Mr Knaggs said.

“Water, sewerage, electrical supply, traffic signalling."

The first of the new-age underground additions to the traditional infrastructure are sensors.

These sensors will tell the sprinklers when gardens need watering, tell the surface operators how everything is working, if the design life of a piece of infrastructure is nearing its end and provide messaging if public transport, taxis and ride sharing services are late or ahead of time.

“It can also monitor LED public lighting; things like the digital capacity of the new city centre,” Mr Knaggs said.

The sensors will tell when bins in public spaces, residential and commercial properties are full.

Sensors will activate the technology to empty the bins underground using a 6.5-kilometre network of two-metre deep pipes to suck the rubbish to a central collection facility.

The sensors and those pipes are now in the ground in the first third of the Maroochydore project.

Sun Central is trying to lay the platform to attract new health, education, transport technology and commerce businesses to the Sunshine Coast.

“What we are hoping is that the project can provide a test bed for the sorts of innovative technology we are now seeing emerge,” he said.

“The signs should be telling where the nearest available park for your vehicle will be – whether it is driverless or not.

“What’s the next bus, when can I catch it, where and when the next events are on, where’s the cheapest coffee, where can I get a taxi or an Uber."

The Maroochydore site is near the Sunshine Coast Airport, which is about to have a new runway that can attract international flights and sits at the northern end of the planned future rail line from Beerwah.
