Swans not worried about 'Buddy' Franklin hit on Tim Taranto

Taranto copped a hefty welcome to the AFL by Franklin in Friday night's 12-point preseason loss to the Swans at Blacktown, the Sydney forward delivering a shuddering hip and shoulder to the youngster on the wing early in the second quarter.

But the hit, which appeared to be below Taranto's shoulder and therefore a legal bump, was made all the more forceful after GWS ruckman Shane Mumford crashed into Franklin in the lead up to the incident causing a domino effect.

Franklin was not reported on the night. A shaken and sore Taranto was taken from the field but returned about 20 minutes later and kicked a terrific goal. The match review panel will examine the bump more closely on Monday and Rampe didn't expect Franklin would feel their wrath.

"He won't have a problem with that," Rampe said after watching a replay of the incident.

"From where I looked it looked pretty fair, it looked pretty good.

"He [Franklin] is just a big presence out there and I think it's stating the obvious but we look a lot more powerful and influential out there on the field when he's doing his thing. It was just good to have him back out there, he's been training really well for a couple of weeks now."

Franklin was dominant up forward for the Swans on Friday kicking two goals in the opening term in atrocious conditions at Blacktown. He had no more influence over the scoreboard after the quality of his supply dropped away, but still had an impact on the contest by crashing into packs and making his presence felt in midfield on occasion.

It was his first hit out of the year following post-season shoulder surgery after last year's grand final loss to the Western Bulldogs.

The Buddy bump, his return to the field and goal marked a big night for Taranto, a ball-winning midfielder drafted at pick No.2 from bayside Melbourne's Sandringham Dragon's last year.

GWS coach Leon Cameron was full of praise for the 19-year-old, whom he described as "tough" for a first-year player.

"Credit to the kid. He got up straight away and within four or five minutes he was back out there," he said.

"We really admire that about him. He puts his head over the footy and we were rapt with him getting back out there."

Second-year defender Callum Mills was also superb for the Swans, racking up 20 assured touches and oozing all of the composure that earned him last year's AFL's Rising Star award.

Mills has been slated for a possible push in to the Swans midfield this season, but Rampe expected his back six comrade to stay put.

"We absolutely love having him down there and as for the midfield talk, we have Dan Hannebery, Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker, I don't think he's going anywhere, he's not leaving the backline any time soon," Rampe said."

"The first thing we noticed when he walked into the place is he's really mature for his age and I think obviously that shows in the way he goes about it on the field. Off field he's just exactly the same.

"The thing with Millsy, it's a gradual improvement and he's got that real steady head on his shoulders. He's the ultimate professional ... he's just going to keep ticking along and he'll just keep getting better over time, I'm very confident about that."

The Swans head to Albury next weekend to play St Kilda on Sunday in their final preseason hit-out before a round-one clash at the SCG against Port Adelaide on March 25.
