The star signing was a late withdrawal from the 36-point loss in Greater Western Sydney's season opener against the Crows in Adelaide, with the Giants already missing fellow marquee woman Renee Forth (knee), priority selection Louise Stephenson (knee) and Mai Nguyen (leg).

Swanson trained on Tuesday night and will train again on Thursday before being asked to prove her fitness.

"With hamstrings it's one of those things – do you wait a week if it's not quite right or do you risk it and if something happens then, because it's such a short season, she's out for the rest of the comp," Giants coach Tim Schmidt said.

"It's a decision that we obviously have to make. Emma's health and injury is in our mind so we don't want to do anything to jeopardise that either.

"That's sport and that's footy. You want the best players on the park at once but it is sport and these things happen. You don't dwell on it, you might need to adapt a few things but you work with what you've got."

Forth suffered a sickening knee injury in August rupturing her ACL and medial ligaments, while Stephenson went down against Brisbane in pre-season with a knee injury of her own, although Schmidt was hopeful the ruck from Victoria would be back before season's end.

"After speaking with the medical staff, we're quite confident that Lou can get up for the last few games," Schmidt said.

"Injuries and knees and things like that can be a little bit funny you just don't know sometimes how they're going to go."

A depleted Giants struggled to impact the scoreboard against a well-drilled Crows outfit on Saturday afternoon, with their only goal slotted by Phoebe McWilliams in the last quarter.

"We probably had a few too many basic errors where we turned the footy over, fumbled a little bit too much and that really hurt us because Adelaide were able to attack from our mistakes," Schmidt said.

"The result was disappointing. Nothing against Adelaide, they made the most of their opportunities and probably held their structures a little bit better.

"It hurts when, for example like the first quarter, you have the ball in your forward half for the first five minutes and the first attack that Adelaide do they kick a goal and you've only got the one point on the board."

Meanwhile, star Giants recruit Brett Deledio has suffered a minor calf injury that will likely rule him out of at least two pre-season games.

The 243-match veteran, who was traded to the club from Richmond last year, will be wrapped in cotton wool for the next month after his 2016 was cut short with calf problems.
