Australian cricket's greatest off-spinner Nathan Lyon's friendship with Raiders skipper Jarrod Croker landed him in the rooms at Parramatta Stadium in round six.

While a seemingly endless international schedule meant Lyon struggled to make many more games, he's been watchful from afar.

"I've been watching very closely over the last couple of weeks so I'll be watching again this week, that's for sure," Lyon said.

Lyon said there was a "bit of banter flying back and forth" when the Raiders met Newcastle twice in golden point this season – teammate Josh Hazlewood is a Knights devotee.

Lyon was on the right end of the scoreline the second time around after the first clash ended in a draw, and he isn't the only cricketer with a reserved seat on the Raiders bandwagon.

Ask any Canberra Raiders fan if they were there the day it snowed at Canberra Stadium in 2000 and the majority will say yes.

In reality only 7834 people were there that day and Lyon's NSW teammate Ryan Carters was one of them.

Carters never missed a game as a kid growing up in Canberra and a little bit of snow certainly wasn't going to keep him away.

"I remember it was freezing in the stands, but because the Raiders were playing we got along to support," he said.

"I remember it as exciting because it's not often that it snows in Canberra – once every few years if you're lucky – so as a kid that's a real thrill."

Carters said he would be scrambling for a ticket should the Raiders beat Melbourne in their first preliminary final since 1997 to advance to the NRL grand final.

Some predict the green machine will be cannon fodder for the Storm at AAMI Park, but Carters doesn't agree – he believes "they can do anything".

"It's been a long time since they've made it this far in the competition so I really hope they get over the line on the weekend and then go all the way," he said.

Carters is part of a lengthy procession of big names backing the green machine in their finals charge.

Australian batsman Usman Khawaja was fitted with a lime green jersey in 2012.

The club's former number one ticket holder Brad Haddin was pictured raising his bat in the Sydney Cricket Ground change rooms wearing a Raiders player-issued jersey and his Test baggy green.

Race car driver Mark Webber was a Raiders ballboy in the golden era. He ran out the sand for club legend Mal Meninga during two premiership seasons in 1989 and 1990. Just inside the door at Raiders HQ is a Raiders jersey with Webber's signature on it.

Television personality Erin Molan isn't one to shy away from her hometown allegiance.

If the Raiders upset Melbourne, expect to see a few famous faces decked out in green on NRL grand final day.
