Canberra Raiders Cup: West Belconnen's Bobby Roberts inspiring 'the fat kids'

Now Roberts is the Canberra Raiders Cup's best player and he has the Les McIntyre Medal to prove it leading into the grand final against Queanbeyan Kangaroos on Sunday.

Roberts said the medal around his neck was one "for all the kids that have been called fat [and] told [you're] no good".

Roberts is open to jibes on game day with the No. 21 on his back – he is far too big for the No. 6 jersey usually reserved for a five-eighth.

"I don't know what the club was thinking, I was never going to fit in a small," Roberts said.

"They stitched me up last year with the same thing and they ordered another one in. The club was happy to give me another jumper, a bigger jumper because the other one didn't fit.

"But once I started playing good in it, the novelty of it became a thing and I just stuck with the 21."

Any cheeky digs at Roberts about his weight are water off a duck's back for one of the game's larrikins, but he saw his McIntyre Medal win as a chance to speak out.

"I'm a pretty happy-go-lucky sort of bloke but there's a lot of kids out there that don't take it that way and struggle with it a bit," Roberts said.

"I just thought if anyone saw it through that, especially coming through [reserves] last year and finally getting a crack at a whole year under [coach Troy Thompson] and then winning the medal just really topped it off."

Roberts' off the cuff playing style has guided West Belconnen to within touching distance of their first premiership in nine years.

While he puts it down to "luck", Roberts has been working on getting the bounce of the ball to go his way since he was a kid.

Having been around the game his entire life, the importance of being a good role model is not lost on Roberts.

Roberts was lining up a conversion from the sideline in West Belconnen's final regular season game against Yass.

He heard a young girl cheering, at which point her father yelled: "She reckons you'll get it!"

"I just said to him 'well I hope she's right, and if she's right I'll give her a high-five'," Roberts said.

True to form Roberts nailed the shot at goal and ran over to the fence to give the girl and her little brother a high-five.

"For the rest of the game I could hear them screaming out 'go 21'!" Roberts said.

"It makes you feel good as well, but the little things that you can do that make young kids feel good, it puts a smile on your face being able to do that."

Roberts will line up opposite cousin Brent Crisp in the decider as he looks to bring West Belconnen their first premiership trophy since 2007.
