The pilot begins early next year, with 4899 of the 16,579 households in Weston Creek and Kambah already registering to receive a green bin. The bins cost $50 and participation is voluntary.

On Tuesday, Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris will announce that midway through the year Tuggeranong residents will be able to access the bins also.

The fortnightly service will pick up green waste from the bin such as lawn clippings, leaves and branches. Food scraps and other organic waste that might usually end up in a compost will not be allowed in the bins.

The $1.7 million pilot was announced in the 2016-17 budget, when Ms Fitzharris said the pilot program would be reviewed after 12 months to ensure it worked properly.

But on Monday, she said, "I am thrilled after only three months since the original announcement was made to be in a position to extend the service."

More parts of Canberra would get the bins in a "phased roll-out".

"Access to a garden waste bin will save families both time and money, while also having environmental benefits. It's what people have told us they want.

"Garden waste collected from the kerb will be processed, recycled and made available through commercial providers. The tender for these services will be finalised ahead of the pilot."

The Liberals took a promise to introduce green-waste bins to the 2012 election, but it has previously been dismissed by Labor as too expensive. As recently as January, deputy chief minister Simon Corbell wrote to green waste hauler Rod Tarlinton, saying the government was unlikely to fund a bin for garden wast because of the high cost. The government was doing a waste feasibility study, but "as a third bin service for households has been previously considered and determined not to be cost-effective in the territory, it is unlikely this work will recommend the introduction of a third bin for green waste", his letter read.

Labor candidates for Tuggeranong Joy Burch and Mick Gentleman welcomed the announcement, Ms Burch said they would be welcomed by residents and Mr Gentleman saying Tuggeranong was a logical place, given its mature trees and gardens.
