December and February were at least two degrees warmer than average this season, Weatherzone meteorologist Ben McBurney said, and our rain gauges were slightly emptier too despite more than double the average monthly rainfall in January.

"We had a drier than average December and February but January was quite wet," Mr McBurney said.

"For summer rainfall, Canberra seemed to have slightly below average rain, we picked up 154 millimetres for the entire season and the average is 172 millimetres."

About 106 millimetres of that fell last month, almost double December and February's rainfall combined.

Much of January's rainfall was dumped during several large storms which lashed the area, Mr McBurney said.

But ACT storm chaser and photographer Ben Andrews said the lingering El Nino meant it was a bit of a lacklustre storm season.

"It's been a poor season as far as storm chasing is concerned. We've only had three supercells.There hasn't been much rain but if there is it's been coming down pretty hard and it's a bit shortlived," he said.

The mercury plunged to 3.8 degrees on December 12, about nine degrees colder than the average night time temperature.

It maxed out at 39.3 degrees on January 13, simmering into our warmest summer night this season on January 14 at 21.8 degrees.

Last week's last-minute heat blast broke late season records, with 38 degrees recorded on Thursday.

But overall, our average summer temperature was only one degree above normal, Mr McBurney said.

"December was quite warm, the day times were about three degrees above average, January was closer to average but February was again warm, with the daytimes two degrees above average."

He said as we move into autumn, we should see the warmer than average temperatures continue.

"In terms of rainfall we should see at least midway into March and into April and May an increased chance of rain as the El Nino breaks down," Mr McBurney said.

And while that won't bring any joy for Canberra's dedicated band of storm chasers, Mr Andrews has helped to foster through the ACT Weather Chasers and Photographers Facebook page, he said there's always next year.

"Now that El Nino is at an end, that should bring more rain and humidity. Next year should be a good season," Mr Andrews said.
