But try-scoring expert Folau says he doesn't feel the pressure to live up to anyone's expectations other than his own as he prepares to conquer the next frontier of his code-hopping career.

Folau will make his World Cup debut when the Wallabies play Fiji in Cardiff on Wednesday (Thursday 1.45am). It comes five years after he quit the NRL and three years after a stint in the AFL.

The Wallabies will rely on their most potent attacking weapon to give them an edge in a tournament which also boasts former league stars Sonny Bill Williams and Sam Burgess.

"I think for every player, this [the World Cup] is where they want to dominate. This is as high as you can go … it's no different for myself," Folau said on the eve of the clash against Fiji.

"You won't want to force that too much otherwise it ends up too hard, but I guess you want to be confident and play free-flowing rugby.

"It's probably the same feeling [as playing State of Origin for Queensland] … It doesn't get any bigger than this. I want to enjoy the game and play to my expectation.

"I'm not worried about anyone else or what anyone else thinks, it is just what I think. If do that then I am satisfied."

The Wallabies have been busy coming up with plans to combat teams who try to take Folau completely out of the contest.

That means getting him the ball in open space from set moves and ensuring the Wallabies can control possession for long enough to give him opportunities.

The World Cup marks the next step in Folau's already glittering career which boasts NRL titles, State of Origin triumphs and a Super Rugby championship.

He looms as the X-factor in a Wallabies squad hoping to win the World Cup for the first time since 1999.

Australia's champion teams of the past have always had game-breakers capable of bamboozling opponents and taking charge.

Their stars have also stood up to be counted when it matters most.

In the triumphant 1991 World Cup side it was David Campese and Michael Lynagh and in 1999 it was Tim Horan and Stephen Larkham.

"When you look at Izzy's game, he rarely puts a foot wrong," said Larkham, who is now the Wallabies backs coach.

"Where you see him open up teams is when everyone fills their roles in the multi-phase attack structure. That opens opportunities for him.

"Someone like [Folau] you've got to make sure you've got set-piece plays to get him into the game or your multi-phase pattern gets him more touches than others. He's a world-class player."

Folau said the enormity of the World Cup was yet to hit after spending the past week in a bubble at the team's camp in Bath.

The players have been removed from all the hype and excitement of the opening games.

"It hasn't been too noisy I guess, it's been pretty quiet. And from my perspective, I like that a lot," Folau said.

"We've been able to do our work without any fuss or distraction."

Folau can get European redemption at the World Cup after rivals successfully nullified his influence on the Wallabies' spring tour last year.

The 26-year-old has a remarkable strike-rate of getting across the try line, scoring 18 times in his 33 Tests for Australia.

But he admitted to "feeling down" when teams found a way to take him out of the contest and, in a warning to World Cup rivals, Folau insists he's now "in a good space".

"I think last year obviously was a little frustrating. I couldn't do much, as a player you've just got to review that … it's not a problem," Folau said.

"I'm confident going into every game but I know that every game at the World Cup will be at another level.

"Because I have high standards of myself I'm always going to be feeling down if I don't feel I'm playing to my expectations.

"I feel like this year I've been ticking the boxes of what I know I can do and I'm pretty happy with that … you've got to find the feel of the game where you can inject yourself."
