But there is a chance storms and light rainfall could return on Friday and Saturday afternoons.

Weatherzone meteorologist Guy Dixon expected fine conditions and tops of 28 to 29 degrees over those days.

"Showers and thunderstorms remain a risk throughout [Friday] afternoon and Saturday afternoon but it's getting less likely as the weekend progresses," Mr Dixon said.

"We're going to have a low pressure trough residing over south-eastern parts of the nation [on Friday], moving past the ACT on Saturday. We'll have mostly sunny conditions throughout the day."

Thunder, lightning and hail hit Canberra Thursday afternoon but those hanging out for a heavy dose of rain were left disappointed.

Canberra received 5.4 milimetres of rain between 5pm and 7pm.

Conditions were less severe than the wild weather that rocked the capital last week.

Mr Dixon said thunderstorms began in southern and central parts of the ACT before slowly moving in a north-easterly direction towards the capital.

He said the low-pressure trough was relatively dry, which meant less rainfall than normal.
