With the Sydney Cricket Ground out of action because it was hosting the LA Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks, the facilities and strong crowds at Manuka Oval showed the move to be an accidental masterstroke.

More than 7000 people attended the first three days of the final between NSW and WA before rain and the start of the working week kept punters away.

The match finished in a tame draw on Tuesday, with both teams agreeing to an early finish with the Blues on 4-197 in their second innings with an overall lead of 464.

Among the highlights was a magnificent century from man of the match Moises Henriques, WA's fightback and NSW fast bowler Josh Hazlewood turning the game on its head when he snared two wickets with the first two balls of the Warriors' innings.

Cricket NSW chief executive Andrew Jones said hosting the game in Canberra had been a huge success, with the boutique venue adding to the atmosphere.

"It was really buzzing on the first couple of days and that was terrific for our players; [it] felt like a home game,'' Jones said.

"We're delighted to have played it in Canberra. I think it's worked out very well for everybody.

''The situation was thrust upon us, but it's worked out very well from a cricket and fan point of view and the point of view of demonstrating our support for the ACT and southern NSW region.''

Jones said it would be a challenge to play a Shield game in Canberra next year because of Manuka Oval's commitments with the cricket World Cup.

Manuka Oval will host three World Cup games in February and March next year.

Discussions about the Sydney Thunder playing a game of the Twenty20 Big Bash League in the national capital were still taking place.

Manuka Oval has submitted a tender, as has the Sydney Showgrounds, while ANZ Stadium could still host Thunder games as well.

''We're keen to bring something here,'' Jones said.

''If we can't bring a round match, we'll bring a pre-season game.''
