The ACT Meteors spearhead was rewarded for a fantastic start to the Women's National Cricket League with inclusion in a 14-player Southern Stars squad for the one-off Test and three one-day internationals with England.
It's her first appearance in the national team since taking a hat-trick to help Australia clinch the Ashes in 2011.
The 26-year-old has had a year away from the game to recharge the batteries, and suffered a broken toe after tripping over her dog and falling down stairs.
Farrell is hoping to replicate the feats of Johnson, the left-arm quick making a triumphant return to Ashes cricket.
''It's fantastic to see the boys win the Ashes back in three Tests, and to watch Mitch Johnson come back has been quite inspiring,'' she said.
''We met the boys at the pub for a little social get-together a couple of years ago after a Twenty20 match at Adelaide Oval. It was great just chatting to [Johnson] and to see how they do it in the Aussie men's team.
''To see him come back after some time out and an injury … he's someone I idolise.''
Farrell has made 48 international appearances for Australia - 23 one-dayers, 23 Twenty20 games, and two Tests.
But the constant travel wore her down, leading her to step away from the game at the age of just 24.
''I took a break because mentally my head wasn't there,'' she said.
But Farrell still had the passion and joined the Meteors last season, but was restricted to just two rounds after her bizarre toe injury.
She has returned in stellar form this season and capped off her comeback with a five-wicket haul against NSW last month.
The Meteors are fourth on the T20 table and can make the finals by winning one of two games against Queensland Fire in Brisbane this weekend.
Farrell's focus will then turn to claiming a spot back in the Australian attack for the Ashes Test at the WACA Ground next month.
''It's fantastic to be back in the Aussie colours again,'' she said. ''Taking the hat-trick was probably one of my greatest cricketing memories.
''Hopefully I can get into the team and help Australia reclaim the Ashes.''
FRIDAY: WNCL - ACT Meteors v Queensland Fire, at Allan Border Field, 3pm.
