And the Canberra Toyota Cup hooker is using his eldest sibling's will power as motivation before today's grand final against West Tigers.
Aged 18, Joe's career was almost over before it began thanks to a chronic back injury.
Ben was inspired watching the Raiders back rower work hard to save his career.
''He had pretty bad back problems and one doctor told him he should never play footy again,'' Ben said.
''He worked really hard on his core a fair bit, just by himself at home.
''Joe played his 100th [NRL] game this year, and the whole family was pretty stoked.''
Ben's other older brother Mick played a starring role in Canberra's 2008 Toyota Cup premiership, scoring two tries in the 28-24 grand final win over Brisbane.
But Ben has purposely avoided any talk of trying to follow in Mick's footsteps this week.
He's intent on writing his own story.
''Definitely, that's why this week I haven't worried about what Mick did when he won the grand final,'' Ben said.
''I've got to go and do my own thing.''
