The Court of Arbitration for Sport last week found Elmir violated anti-doping laws and made her ineligible to box until May 7, 2012.

Elmir was also ordered to surrender the national title she won in February.

The decision ends eight months of uncertainty for the 30-year-old, after she tested positive to banned diuretics furosemide and amiloride at the Australian boxing titles in Hobart in February.

Elmir was initially slapped with a provisional suspension, which shattered her dreams of representing Australia at the London Olympic Games.

Her ban officially began on May 7 and her initial appeal was rejected just two days later.

Then, with the prospect of a two-year ban hanging over her, Elmir fronted a two-day hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in July

The decision, handed down last Friday, means Elmir is eligible to box at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, a crucial first step in her campaign to fight at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Despite the ordeal, Elmir said a career in boxing was still her dream.

''My heart's still in boxing, it's still in my belly. I dream about it - I can't shake that dream off,'' Elmir said.

''I'm still dealing with the injury to my ego [but] I'll back myself to still go to the Commonwealth Games and I will be No.1 in Australia again.

''Twelve months, compared to two years, which is what was proposed, is fantastic news.''

But it wasn't the reduced ban that pleased Elmir most about the decision.

Court arbitrator Dr Tricia Kavanagh found Elmir moderately at fault and did not consume the banned substances to enhance performance.

''That's key to my sporting reputation,'' Elmir said.

''I prepared myself for the ban, but the findings are more important because they give me more clarity and closure to what I've been through. People made their own assumptions without knowing the circumstances, so at least now the record has been put straight.''

Elmir successfully argued she took a tablet containing the banned substance to reduce the effects of swollen ankles caused by an international flight from Ireland - her European training base - to Australia days before the national titles.

Elmir said her mother and grandmother suffer from the same condition after long flights.

Elmir was given the pill by an Irish friend who had it prescribed to counteract the same symptoms.

The two diuretics are banned because they act as masking agents for other performance-enhancing substances.

Diuretics are also appealing to athletes because they increase urination and aid rapid weight loss, helping fighters make weight.

''Now I've got the verdict and there's an actual date, great, I'll deal with it. I'll keep training and work towards that day,'' Elmir said.

Elmir will now concentrate on returning to thr ring in other martial arts disciplines.

The flyweight will make her mixed martial arts debut on the Gold Coast in October, before a kickboxing bout in the capital in November.
